Day 117: Calculator or No Calculator…That is the Question
One of the things I want students to be able to do is differentiate between a calculator non calculator question; that is, I want them to choose an appropriate tool as per the Math practices. From the first day of class, I try to have my kiddos look closely at the problem and determine at the right time whether this would be a problem they would see on a non-calculator form of an assessment or a calculator part. Although its not apparent here, we work on estimating the solution without a calculator at various stages of the solution process and revise our thinking along the way. I’m really happy to say they are getting pretty good at differentiating the difference.
