Day 58: Conditional Probability

20141121_114636

I believe one of the most challenging topics in the probability section of AP Stats is the conditional probability concept, applying it and then reversing the condition (why did Bayes ever derive his formula?!).  Usually I use an activity from the NCTM’s Navigating Probability series called Abby’s Kennels to give students a chance to “experience” conditional probability first hand.  Unfortunately, I was sick that day (last minute flu like symptoms and not like me to miss school).  I didn’t think a guest (substitute) teacher would be able to facilitate the activity and subsequent discussions that ensue while the kids complete the activity. So this year, I’m relying on the direct instruction approach…not the best, but it is what it is.
